For the final project, you and your group will research and write liner notes for an imagined mixtape, or compilation album, that follows a set of musical and/or extramusical ideas across multiple genres and time periods in the 20th and 21st centuries. Your liner notes will be in two parts: An introductory essay that explains your musical selections as a whole and provide a context in which to understand the individual tracks. All group members should collaborate to research and write this text. A listening guide for each track (multimedia options are acceptable). Each group member is responsible for one listening guide. Your group will also prepare a short research-based multimedia presentation to share with the class. The repertoire on your mixtape / compilation album should be drawn from multiple musical styles. No more than two tracks may be from the same musical style (though it is up to you to define musical style in the context of your album). No two tracks may be from the same performer, band, ensemble, or composer. In general, I would encourage you to think broadly and creatively about how you might connect musical sounds and artists across different genres, time periods, and geographical locations. Research sources Locate at least 8 research sources related to the theme of your project and/or the individual tracks that you have chosen. At least 3 of these should be scholarly sources (journal article, book chapter, edited collection, or monograph). Your grade will take into account the quality of your sources as well as your use of them. For this reason, I would suggest avoiding Wikipedia and similar sites. Your submission will consist of the following: Credit list Title of the album List of contributors: the members of your group and a short desсrіption of what each person did. If not all group members contributed equally, please add a note to that effect and explain the circumstances. Track listing Full bibliographic reference for each track (use the style guide of your choice) Provide a link to each track (Spotify, YouTube, Bandcamp, etc.) or, if all tracks are on Spotify, create a playlist and share that link. If you would like to use a track that is not available online, please speak with Prof. Risk. Introductory Essay What are the key themes of this mixtape / compilation album? In the context of this essay, you should draw connections between the different musical styles on your album and between the individual tracks and the research sources. Submit as a Word doc., approx. 1500 words Track-by-Track Listening Guides Create a listening guide for each track. Listening guides should be aimed at an audience of high school or undergraduate students; presume that they have no music theory knowledge. Creative approaches to listening guides are encouraged. Do not simply provide a listing of time codes and musical features. Rather, guide your listener through the music with the goal of helping them make their own connections, and perhaps even extensions, about the sounds they are hearing. On which musical elements would you like your listeners to focus and why?
