This assignment is a continuation of the descriptive statistics topic from Week 6. This week begins our work in using the statistical software (POLYSTAT) in the Nufrio/Macfie book. Please start by acquainting yourself with POLYSTAT in Chapter 2 of the Nufrio/Macfie book. Go to p. 104 of Macfie/Nufrio Chapter 4 and do the exercise explained in Exercise 4.8. Students were surveyed on a Likert Scale (1 = strongly agree, 2= agree, 3= neutral, 4= disagree and 5= strongly disagree). The obtained mean of 1.7 from POLYSTATA (sheet #1 ) implies that the majority of responses were close to “agree”. This suggests that the majority to the MPA students surveyed believe that learning/applying statistics will have a positive impact on their current or future work. The SD of .657 implies that there are no outliers and that the majority of the observations fall within 1SD of the mean. The coefficient of variation (CV) suggests some variability in the data (the CV is over 35%, 38%). Dr. Nufrio’s rule of thumb is that a CV of greater than 40% may be evidence of moderate to high variation. An examination of a frequency histogram of the data should indicate where the variability or outliers may be.
