The only way to understand is to be in each individual’s character’s shoes; which makes the writing style Ward chose for this novel very unique and unpredictable. Ward tells the story through a multiple person’s point of view.The whole novel gravitates back and forth through Joseph, who goes by Jojo and his mother Leonie’s perspectives. These viewpoints allow the reader to make connections between the past and present and represent the different ways that multiple generations are shaped by, and respond to, their history.Ward specifically adds a whole new level of soul-stirring apparitions only she can see that appear as ghosts of Leonie’s deceased brother named Given, as well as the Ghost Richie; whom only Jojo can see and had known through their time spent at the same prison Parchman. Richie tried to escape, but was caught and unfortunately did not make it out alive. Ward explicitly reveals the theme of “The Pressures of Motherhood”, and “Loss of Innocence.”
