I will paste the instructions for the mid-term essay below. The topic I would like to use is “Similar Theme in “The Lottery” and “The Hunger Games”. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and the book “The Hunger Games”. This is for an English Comp 2 class at a community college. The similar theme is both had a tradition of the lottery or the reaping (in the hunger games). Dystopian Society. Protagonists stand up for justice. In the Hunger Games, Katniss stood up and started a revolution. In The Lottery, Mrs. Hutchinson tried to wake people up as well with her argument about they shouldn’t do this just because it’s tradition and it’s so old, no one even knows when the tradition started and if they are even doing it right anyway. The Lottery makes you feel like you win something, but you are actually going to be sacrified via stoning in the hopes for a better harvest. In The Hunger Games, the reaping is 2 kids from each district, 12 districts, so they have a 1/24th chance of being the survivor of the games and it’s to teach the districts annually that the Capitol is in charge of them.
