Instructions This is your second documentary assignment and will require you to watch three documentaries: An Inconvenient Truth (2006), An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power (2017), and Before the Flood (2016). These three documentaries focus on the causes of anthropogenic climate change, the presentation of this information to the public, polical and social perception of anthropogenic climate change, as well as the challeneges faced by those who seek to make change. The documentaries also cover global agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as the struggles of global citizens to make the changes necessary to facilitate them. You are required to watch all three documentaries to recieve full credit Your responses need to be written in paragraph format, not a bulleted list responding to each prompt individually. Do not simply provide a summary of the documentary; I have already seen them and do not need a “refresher”. I am interested in your opinions about the documentaries; the feelings they produced, what you think their strengths and weakness are, and their overall effectiveness at presenting material The assignment is due Sunday, April 25th at 11:59pm The Promts Remember to justify your responses, either with specific exmples from the documentaries or detailed explanations of your thought process and opinions An Inconvenient Truth and An Inconvenient Sequel: In paragraph format please respond to the following prompts regarding An Inconvenient Truth and An Inconvenient Sequel: In both documentaries, former Vice President Al Gore speaks about the moral and ethical imperative to slow the ongoing climate crisis as well as to reduce the reliance on practices that contribute to climate change Do you think the “moral and ethical arguement” is a strong arguement? Do you think the “moral and ethical arguement” has the power to generate large-scale social and political change? What sort of issues do you see with relying on a moral position to generate global change and a movement towards sustainable practices? An Inconvenient Truth was one of the first well-publicized and multi-award winning films regarding climate change and one of the first released with great success in public movie theaters. Do you think the level of publicity it recieved may have influenced its ability to reach individuals who were unaware of the climate crisis, or do you think the majority of viewers were those who were already aware of the crisis? What impact do you this publicity and ability to reach a broader audience may or may not have had regarding raising awareness? Both documentaries are presented from the perspective of Gore as he conducts interviews, hosts presentation and seminars, and attends international meetings, however there are numerous personal anecdotes interspersed among the “formal” presentations. Do you think this method of storytelling is effective at presenting information on the climate crisis as well as a compelling argument for climate activism? Before the Flood: In paragraph format please respond to the following prompts regarding Before the Flood: Leonardo DiCaprio acts as both the narrator and the focal point of this documentary. Do you think this positively impacted its visibility and ability to reach more diverse audiences, especially audiences that do not “typically” watch documentaries? DiCaprio starts the documentary by stating that he is generally pessimistic regarding man’s ability to make rapid and significant changes necessary to have a major impact on the climate crisis. Do you think DiCaprio’s opinion has changed given all that he presented in the documentary? What is your opinion on the ability for human change and progress? During the documentary, DiCaprio meets with a major world religious leader who has become outspoken in terms of the climate crisis. Without getting into religious politics, do you think the support of religious leaders will influence more people to support changes in human action and our relationship to the climate and environment? All three documentaries In paragraph format please respond to the following prompts regarding all three documentaries, including comparing and constrasting them: All three documentaries are presented by “civilians” who lack higher degrees in climate science, yet still present scientific data and projections that are well supported with scientifically valid evidence. Do you think their presentation of this information makes it more or less accessable to the general public? What would you say to individuals who feel their “civilian” and non-scientific background invalidates their presentation of infromation or otherwise encourages skepticism and denial? Both An Inconvenient Sequel and Before the Flood end with a public speech regarding the current climate crisis and the need for political and social change, but were given to vastly different audiences. Which speech do you think was more powerful and effective?
