You will conduct documentary research on a specific aspect of the selected issues (Pt. III of the course) and assemble a research dossier consisting of the following parts:
A one-page (no more than 350 words) project proposal in which you specify:
For whom you are doing this project (your boss or a client or a specific organization–can be public or private)?
Why is it important? (1 paragraph)
What is the broad issue or issues that motivate your inquiry (what you would like to explore)?
The purpose of this 1-page project proposal is to raise a question related to one of the selected issues. All four issues are broad and include: Social Determinants of Health, The Opioid Epidemic, Quality of Health Services, and Access and Rationing. Narrow down the issue of interest to you. If you are working in a health system, try find an issue you could explore within your organization or an issue to which your organization could (or should) be responding. Some examples include:
What measures could your healthcare organization take in response to the social determinants of its population’s poor health?
What could your organization or a local neighborhood, city, or state do to address the opioid epidemic?
How could your organization or any other organization improve the quality of health services in your community?
How could your organization or any other organization help to improve access to health care or improve the way it rations high-cost pharmaceuticals or any other service?
Your proposal should address the following two questions:
Why is the issue/question(s) you have selected important and for whom are you doing this documentary research? You could, for example, present the dossier to your boss or the CEO of your organization or to a client or policymaker.
How will you find relevant materials to address your question(s)? You should complete a literature review and also inquire into how other organizations have addressed the question or problem. Look for relevant local information assuming you have narrowed down the issue.
