The fourth essay you write for this class will be a 4-page essay. Your essay will be a close reading of the plays we’ve read for this course; remember that there is no need to summarize the plays (I already know what the plays are about and what happens in them). Direct quotations and/or paraphrases will help support what you say, after which you will need to cite according to MLA guidelines. Please do not include block quotes (quotes longer than 5 lines). At least two of your sources for this essay will be from scholarly/peer-reviewed articles from the OC library resources such as ProQuest, Academic Search Elite, or JSTOR. Be sure to provide analysis of the outside research you are incorporating into the text and its importance to the ideas you are presenting in order to help the reader better understand your argument. Using notes from lecture to support what you have to say is fine, but basing your paper on what we’ve said in class is not original and thus considered plagiarism. Choose one of the prompts below:”Sign o’ the times.” Many readers seek to further understand text through a historical context; this is often known as new historicism. Taking Death of a Salesman AND Fences into consideration, discuss how it relates to its respective time period. What, for example, is the cultural significance of the play? What does it reveal about its time? How was it influenced by what was going on at the time? Your goal here is not to argue that this play relates to its time – that is a given; rather, you are trying to argue what its significance is. You can, therefore, use history, economics, religion, or any other social institution to help form your argument. Keep in mind that you must discuss the relation of a play to its own time and culture, not to ours.
