Write about a character in one of the short stories for this week (individual response) and reply to two or more of your classmates (follow-up response). You will write your responses in letter format.
Individual Response Select a character from ONE of the following short stories: Danticat’s “The One Thing,” or Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour.” Write a short analysis of the character. Consider one of the following questions: What is your reaction to the character? What are one of the character’s dominant traits or flaws? Here are some other questions to consider: “Story of an Hour” Is Louise Mallard s a selfish person? Is she someone who is trying to assert her own identity? Is she someone who desires personal freedom from the constraints of marriage? “One Thing” Why does Marie-Jeanne strongly desire to be with her husband? Is her identity “tied” to her husband? Begin with a salutation. Dear Reader: Draft a short introduction (approximately two-five sentences). Begin with the attention grabber (question, quote, anecdote, or thought-provoking statements). Identify the title of the text and author and provide a brief description of the character. Draft the thesis statement. The thesis statement should state your view of the character and/or one of the character’s traits or flaws. Make sure it is a debatable opinion.
Draft one or more body paragraphs. Your body paragraphs should work to prove that the claim in your thesis statement is true. Use specific, relevant, and sufficient evidence and explain how the evidence supports your thesis statement.
Draft a short conclusion (approximately two – five sentences). Close with a summary of your overall argument. In addition, consider adding a quote, question, or series of questions. End with the closing: Sincerely, Your Name.
Style Consistent point of view: first person. Avoid excessive use of (“you”), i.e., 2nd person point of view. Consistent tense: literary present tense | Clear, concise sentences. Use sentence variety. Format Requirements Length: 275 – 300 words | Single-spaced or Double-spaced (How to double-space in Blackboard Learn) Research Requirements Academic Sources: Use credible sources (if using additional secondary sources). MLA 8th Edition Citations: Use the correct format for citing poetry. Avoid dropped quotes. MLA Works Cited entry: Place the MLA Work Cited entry at the bottom of the response.
Submission Requirements
Access the Response Assignment. Click the Create Thread Entry button. Enter “Response Assignment” for the Entry Title. Write the response in the text box and include an attachment. Click the Submit button.
Follow Up Response For the follow-up response, you will write a letter to two-three of your classmates. Post a nature image or original photo that relates to the text or character, give your reaction to the ending of the story, OR discuss how you would continue the story. How does the nature image or photo relate to the character / text? How do plan to continue the story? Provide evidence. Begin your letter with the salutation (Dear __________:). Thank your classmate for writing the response and let him or her know that you want to share a nature photo, give your reaction to the ending of the story, plan to continue the ending of the story. Provide evidence from the text and a substantial explanation.
