To help with seeing relationships in the “fits” and “unclear” columns of your chart, we are going to build a Venn diagram. A Venn diagram is used to compare and contrast two things. In this assignment, you are comparing and contrasting Swales’ definition of a discourse community with your own personal example of a discourse community.
Below is a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting Swales’ definition and one of our examples of a personal discourse community, the Maryville library.
Make sure you use the space in the Venn diagram for your discourse community to indicate things that you think Swales’ definition misses about your community. For instance, we decided that Swales’ definition does not have a clear description of the leadership structure that is present in the library.
