Granovetter, M., “Economic Action and Social Structure: The Problem of Embeddedness.”, American Journal of Sociology, 91 (1985), 481-93
In this paper, Granovetter attempts to find a more appropriate middle ground between the economic theory that under-socialized behavior, and much of the existing sociological theory that oversocialized behavior. Granovetter believes that it is more accurate to view economic rationality as “embedded” within social relationships.
The traditional economic view of individuals has been characterized as under-socialized.
The sociological view, on the other hand, is over-socialized. Using Granovetter’s article (“Economic
Action and Social Structure”) EXPLAIN your understanding of those terms (under and oversocialized). Provide an example of each one.
