Critical Analysis of One Book on Contemporary Government and Business Relations A common theme throughout the course has been the role of government in markets and the appropriateness and consequences of government intervention in the private sector. The authors of each of the three books you could choose from for this assignment provide an in-depth analysis of a particular industry or business that has been regulated by governments to various degrees. In this assignment, you will analyze the case examined in the book you selected. Specifically, using the theories you have learned throughout the course, analyze whether this case is an example of the public interest theory or the private interest theory of regulation. Based on what you read in the book of your choice, would you argue that the case of the tobacco industry, Theranos, or the pharmaceutical industry better supports the public interest theory of regulation or the private interest theory of regulation? To what extent did government intervene in the business in question, and how did this intervention protect consumers and/or protect business interests? Finally, thinking back to the arguments made by Adam Smith and Alexander Hamilton, given what you know about the regulation of the business in question, what would you advise is the appropriate role for government to play in the regulation of the business/industry in question moving forward? Would you recommend a more hands-off approach or a hands-on approach? Why? You should carefully include references to the book and/or outside sources in crafting your answer. Be sure to make a clear statement of your positions and support those positions with evidence from the book you selected.
