Your response must be concise (limit your response to 200 words) and specific, typed directly into the discussion thread, and include citation of sources (in text and reference list) in APA format. Your reply to your peers should facilitate a lively dialogue on the topic being discussed, should also show analysis and synthesis of information as well as critical thinking that relates to this week’s discussion topic, and, in addition, must be supported by evidence from recent scholarly peer-reviewed journals (preferably nursing journals). (“Recent” is less than five years old. Your textbook is not a journal.) No file can be uploaded. This week topic “Demands for patient safety, reimbursement changes with healthcare reform, technological advances, and the changing roles of healthcare providers require that budgets be constructed as accurately as possible and for nurse managers to understand financial applications,” (Dunham-Taylor & Pinczuk, 2015). Directions: Research one factor contributing to rising health care costs. 1.Why is this particular factor driving up the cost of health care? 2.How will you, as a nursing leader, have the ability to impact the cost of health care delivery? respond back to this post It is no secret that medical technology has come a long way. From switching from paper charts to electronic health records comes the cost of getting and maintaining computers and equipment. There was a sixty-four percent increase in medical technology adoption in four short years in the United States (Okpala, 2018). But it is also no secret that with advancements in technology, comes increases in the cost of healthcare. Not only is the switch from paper records to electronic health records beneficial yet costly, so is the same with robotically assisted surgeries. Iavazzo and Gkegkes (2017) discuss the benefits of robotically assisted surgeries being, but not limited to, decreased intra-operative blood loss, precise movements that decrease surgeon tremor, and decreased recovery time. As a health care nursing leader, it is my responsibility to ensure my patients are receiving the best care possible and in order to do so, it helps having their electronic health record to keep the most up-to-date information on them from their entire care team. It also means that should they be an at-risk surgical candidate that would benefit from a robotic procedure with less recovery time, less risk for infection, and minimally invasive, then that is what my patients deserve. With the health of the electronic system, Epic, I am able to check charges that are billed to my patients and ensure they are not being overcharged for services rendered.
