Background

We’ve been looking at the ideological differences between Democrats (left) and Republicans (right). In this paper, choose ONE political issue (ex: immigration), and come up with an analogy that relates to each parties’ ideological perspectives (ex: Republicans are like cats and Democrats are like dogs).

The analogy must have TWO sides (one for each party). You should be able to connect the similarities to the Democrats and the Republicans ideologies, and you must incorporate a quote.

Paragraph Structure (4 paragraphs total)

Introduction (paragraph one)

Introduce the analogy (ex: how are Democrats like cats? How are Republicans like dogs?)
Tell us about how the political issue you focus on connects to the analogy (ex: when we look at immigration, how are Democrats like cats and Republicans like dogs?) This should only be a sentence…you will expand on this in the body paragraphs.
You may also want to include important background information about the analogy, especially if it is a topic I’m unfamiliar with. (for example, if you are comparing Democrats and Republicans to characters I am unfamiliar with.

Body Paragraph 1

Topic sentence: how are Democrats LIKE something else (ex: cats) when it comes to a political issue (ex: immigration)
Explain the connection (what do Democrats and Cats have in common in terms of their behavior?)
Use a QUOTE from a democrat about an issue like immigration. NOTE: do not quote something about cats. Keep the quotes relevant to politics.
Follow the quote with another connection to the analogy.
This paragraph must include at least one sentence combining technique we’ve discussed in this unit.

Body Paragraph 2

Topic sentence: how are Republicans LIKE something else (ex: dogs) when it comes to a political issue (ex: immigration)
Explain the connection (what do Republicans and Dogs have in common in terms of their behavior)
Use a QUOTE from a democrat about an issue like immigration. NOTE: do not quote something about dogs. Keep the quotes relevant to politics.
Follow the quote with another connection to the analogy.
This paragraph must include at least one sentence combining technique we’ve discussed in this unit.

Conclusion

Take a stance. Which political ideology do you prefer? If you are “stuck in the middle,” explain where you stand on the particular issues you mentioned.
