Original Class Instructions Topic Write a six-page research paper on a topic of your choice. Your topic can deal with a work that we have read for class or it can deal with a work (or works) that we have not read. The work (or works) about which you choose to write should fall in the category of African American literature written (or created) from about 1750 to about 1920. If you choose to deal with a piece of writing that we have not read for class, make sure you clear with me first. Since this is a research paper, you will need to consult some secondary works of literary criticism and/or literary history) I will be glad to help you define your topic and give you some leads on critical studies at which you might wish to look. Again, remember that unlike the old automobile tire commercial, in this case wider is not better—in other words, focus your topic.
