In 2007, Arizona became the first state in the country to mandate criminal justice officials attempt to determine the immigration status of any person during a lawful stop. This authority proved to be a challenge on various levels. Protests erupted in Arizona and throughout the United States. Illegally entering the United States is a crime and our criminal justice system is mandated to uphold the law. Arizona law SB1070 provided for this mandate. However, it also was also the catalyst for protests as an overreach of policing power. We will discuss both sides of this issue. You will continue to watch video segments (Immigration Debate () [Video, 6:27 mins]) and (Obama Admin Expands Law Enforcement Program 287(g), Criticized for Targeting Immigrants and Increasing Racial Profiling () [Video, starting at 14:12 mins]). In a paper, discuss whether or not Arizona law enforcement officials should be authorized to arbitrarily detain people in an attempt to verify whether their immigration status in the United States is legal.
