In your analysis papers, you will analyze a primary source and make connections between that source and broader historical events, themes, and context. To start, choose a primary source to analyze from the chapter. After rereading it carefully, write a 2-page paper that explains the significance of the source and how it relates to the main arguments in the secondary essays and the lecture for that week (broader historical context). Your papers should make an argument about the primary source based on the following questions– Who wrote this source? What is his or her place in society? Why did he or she create this primary source? What was their motivation? What is the perspective of the author? What does the source tell us about when it was written? How does the source connect to the arguments in the secondary essays in the chapter and to our lecture? In other words, what does the source tell us about broader historical themes, trends and context?
