If your article describes more than one experiment, you don’t need to explain all of them in your Inquiry Figure. You can (and probably should) focus on one main question and experiment. Article Selection You will receive an email from your instructor with your assigned journal article for this assignment attached as a PDF to the email. For this assignment, you will take a scientific journal article in the field of nutrition (that you will be assigned) and write a summary of the experiment(s) in it for a nutrition textbook. It might be useful to think of this as telling the story of the experiment to your classmates. You don’t need to go into as much detail as you will find in the journal article. You also need to make sure the science and language you use in your assignment is understandable to the average second year nutrition student. The maximum allowable length is 2 pages total (12 point font, 1.5 spacing, 1” margins all around) – 1 page for your Inquiry figure, and 1 page with your Justification. Title This should be a short, concise, and well-worded research question. Briefly summarize the purpose and methods of the experiment or field study, and include the name of the researcher(s) who conducted the research. This section should provide just enough information so that your reader can understand the results section. Make sure you describe what the researchers did to set up the study, and what they were measuringor looking for. Results Describe what the researchers found in their experiment. Summarize the results in 1-3 sentences. Include figures if they would help the reader to make sense of the results. Figures Pictures can be a valuable and efficient way of presenting information, especially for the experimental design or results sections. For this assignment, you may cut and paste figures (e.g. graphs) directly from your source paper. If you include a photo (or figure) that you found somewhere other than your source paper (or if you make your own figure), you must provide a reference for it. For each figure, add your own labels and/or your own brief caption (a short sentence) to help your reader make sense of it. Conclusion State the conclusions of the experiment in 1-3 sentences. You may also choose to explain the significance of the results. In other words why are the conclusions important to science? Source Provide a citation for the paper in which you found the experiment. If you used a figure from somewhere other than your source paper, provide a citation for this source as well. Use the same format as the text; see also the format and example below. Format of source: First and middle author initial then author last name (repeated for multiple authors), article title, journal title (italicized) volume number: page numbers (date). Additional tips: For more than three authors, only cite the first author’s name and then “et al.” (italicized) after it. What If? Ask an interesting question that relates to the research you’ve just summarized. This question should test the reader’s understanding of the concept underlying the experiment. Justification Write a paragraph that explains why you think your Inquiry Figure would be of interest to nutrition students, and therefore make a good contribution to a nutrition textbook. In other words, why would your Inquiry Figure be interesting to a nutrition student? How does it relate to fundamental nutrition concepts?
