1. Find a book that is written in the first person whose lived experience is completely different than yours. The book should describe how the person felt about, coped with, and was affected by the issue or problem. Remember, these should be first person books about the individual struggle with a disorder of circumstance – not books written by therapists about their clients. Book: A Promise Land by Barack Obama 2. As you read the book, note your own feelings and reactions. Consider how you might respond to a client experiencing this and why. Explain why you chose the book you chose. (Interested in learning more about his journey to be the US President.)What surprised you? What did you learn about yourself? (We grew up in similar, single parent household and we both have the idea of hope.) Ask yourself if there is anything in your past that might make it difficult to maintain your professional stance when working with a client with this/these issue(s). (I come from a background of multiple trauma, my brother was killed due to gun violence snd my mother passed from cancer. )How did the professionals in the books respond? Dig deep and explore!3. The paper should be a reaction paper. How did reading about another’s experience affect you? This should be a paper from the “heart”, not the head. It is not a research paper. This assignment asks you to use your creativity in presenting emotional response to the readings. Include a poem or artwork that speaks to you if you are so moved.
