Language is in a constant state of change. Beyond the components of language or the theories in which it is acquired, teachers involved with ELLs should also have a broader historical understanding of language so they can recognize changes that have occurred and continue to occur. Teachers should also understand the concepts within language variation so that they can contextualize the different ways in which their students may use language. Taking on the role of an ELL teacher, create a 10-15 slide presentation in digital format (e.g., PowerPoint, etc.) for your teacher colleagues to help them better understand some of the concepts related to language change and language variation and how instruction is affected. The role teachers play in helping students of all language and cultural backgrounds feel accepted and supported.
