PLEASE FOLLOW THE RUBRIC! Supported by at least 3 current, credible sources within the last 5 years Many students lose points on the following example. Say you want to reference the CDC. Many will put (CDC, 2012). That is great however for the first citation you want as follows: (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2012). To prepare: Journal Entry #1 Critical reflection of your growth and development during your practicum experience in a clinical setting has the benefit of helping you identify opportunities for improvement in your clinical skills while also recognizing your clinical strengths and successes. This week, you will write a Journal Entry reflecting on your clinical strengths and opportunities for improvement. To prepare: • Refer to your FNP Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment Form from your previous assignment in this week and consider your strengths and opportunities for improvement. Journal Entry • Explain what most excites and/or concerns you about pediatric clinical experiences. Include a description of your strengths and weaknesses in terms of working with children and how these strengths and weaknesses might impact your Practicum experience. • Discuss your personal definition of family and family roles that might impact the assessment of a child and his or her family. Also expand your discussion on the challenges of working with families. Explain how you would handle parents that do not want to vaccinate children. • Then, explain how culture (both the culture of the provider and that of the child and his or her family) may further influence the assessment. • Select and explain a nursing theory to guide your practice with pediatric patients. Not sure if this is useful information but I am adding my discussion from this week class. Discussion – Week 1 The Beginning of my Pediatric Journey I decided to become a nurse to serve my family and assist my neighbors and community, which are often underprivileged and have limited access to healthcare. I have a desire to care for patients of all age groups. Throughout my nursing career, I have worked in various settings, including long-term care, assisted living, group homes for mentally challenged people, acute care hospitals, home care, and now hospice, where patients are usually young adults on to seniors. The opportunity to work in many disciplines has so far helped to broaden my understanding of how to manage patients from young adults to death, which is why I selected Family Nursing Practice. As a practitioner, I want to seize the opportunity to explore the worlds of pediatrics and women’s health to make me the complete FNP I aspire to be. Primary Care of Adolescents and Children is the golden opportunity I have and want to exploit to the best of my ability. Many caregivers and providers have entered the field of nursing to fulfill their desires to help others and the need to make a happy and meaningful career (Macdiarmid et al., 2021). As a parent, I took my daughter to the Emergency Department, ED, a couple of times for non-urgent conditions. Though the visit took the whole night, I did not regret it because I was not sure what was wrong with my daughter, and the best place I want her to be was the hospital in case things go wrong. During discharge, we were fortunate to have a provider who taught us what to deal with similar occurrences in the future and to follow up with our Pediatric Care Provider, PCP. The point to note is that PCPs hold the key to reduce these non-urgent visits of children to the ED by enhancing the PCP-parent relationship, thorough discussion of expectations and treatment options, and referral of parents to other opportunities for support (Ohns et al. 2016). Such work will reduce ED visits and make the parents respect and trust their PCPs more. In effect, the endeavor is beneficial to all parties. FNPs are generally required to educate patients and parents, give information on health, safety, diet, fitness requirements, and growth. FNPs develop mutual and lasting relationships by teaching patients and parents how to protect against diseases and, when required, provide clear, accurate, and practical information about treatment alternatives (Knopf, 2019).
