1) Tell me about the life/death story of Detroit. It is oft told by many [internet] experts. Read Charlie Leduff (chapter 1 will be posted in course content for MARCH 16—get the whole book if possible ) and Rebecca Solnit (https://harpers.org/archive/2007/07/detroit-arcadia/ ), to see core sources describing life/death and life renewing story. Can you relate the patterns of hollowing out and then leaving resilient citizens (with other supports joining in) to find ways for urban renewal to Winnipeg? 2) Read more about Sidewalks Labs proposal for Toronto {or about Hudson Yards in NYC}. Discuss what such developments bring, the controverises that arise and controls needed. On a smaller scale, where could this occur, and describe the positive and negative aspects of a neighborhood retrofitted so that it uses the latest materials and technologies. 3) Look at the death of traditional retail and malls. Can you relate this to Portage Place OR the BAY? How do ideas from Jacobs about mixed use factor in here? How might injections of creative life and experiences help?
