1. “The Atlantic, once the end of the world, was now the beginning.” Discuss this re-centering of world history. Where had the political and economic power bases, traditionally, been before 1500? How and why did this begin to shift starting after 1500 and continuing through the 1600s and 1700s? In addition to discussing Europe, use specific examples from Africa, Asia/Middle East, AND South America to discuss the impact of the “Age of Exploration” on global histories. 2. The so-called “Gunpowder empires” included the Safavids, the Ottomans, and the Mughals. Briefly characterize each of these three (3) empires. What did each of them have in common? What were the differences? What are the dangers for us in using a term like “Gunpowder Empire”? 3. Between 1750 and 1850, the Atlantic World erupted in multiple political, social, intellectual, economic, and social revolutions. Examine the American, French, and Haitian Revolutions, discussing the underlining ideas that drove each. What did these revolutions have in common and what was different?
