The quality improvement initiative that this student is considering is reducing horizontal violence or lateral
bullying in nursing throughout the hospital setting by initiating a safe reporting system and implementing
team building exercises. Nurses, especially young nurses/new grads, have been subjects of workplace
violence for far too long and according to The Joint Commission (2016) “bullying has no place in
healthcare” (p. 1). The negative implications of horizontal violence in nursing have led to a decrease in
morale, loss of productivity, absenteeism, job dissatisfaction, and high turnover rates. All these
consequences contribute to a decrease in patient safety (The Joint Commission, 2016).
