Published shortly after the end of WWII, Orwell’s uncanny ability to predict how technology thirty-five years in the future might impact privacy has resulted in the seepage of phrases such as “Big Brother is watching” from the book into common language, and the word “Orwellian” coming to represent authoritarian political and social mores. In the year 2019 (thirty-five years post 1984), the advent of “fake news,” crowds chanting “lock her up,” and surveillance techniques that make privacy virtually impossible are illustrative of the book’s continued relevance.Borrow the book from AU’s library (or your local library) and read it, or watch Michael Radford’s film adaption entitled 1984 on Netflix. Write a persuasive essay that is an analysis of this work of fiction with reference to how the themes of privacy, totalitarian governance, transparency, and the manipulation of language and history foreshadow events in contemporary society. Given the short length of this paper, you may wish to focus on only one theme.
