Five references related to GEDs and inmate recidivism were found using the Walden University Library database and the SAGE Library database. Search limits were set to include articles that were published from 2015 to 2021 and were peer-reviewed. Keywords searched included:
GED,
high school equivalent,
prisoners,
inmates,
incarcerated individuals,
recidivism,
and re-offender.
The five articles were chosen as they pertained to some combination of GED, inmates, and recidivism. Some of the topics examined in the studies included (a) the impact getting a GED in prison had on inmate recidivism, (b) current policies related to educational programs in prisons, (c) factors that prevented recidivism including obtaining a GED while in prison, and (d) the impact participating in a prison educational program had on behaviors in and out of prison. Each article studied a different aspect of the research problem of education and recidivism. Additionally, the articles provided a new perspective and helped better understand this problem.
