Most of us have had some experience with music whether as listener or performer (or perhaps, even as composer). For your first assignment, I would like you to reflect upon those musical experiences you have had. Make sure that your paper addresses each of the three topics below in the order given. Your essay can be more or less unified according to the topics chosen. 1.Begin with a general consideration of musical experiences, both your casual interactions with music during everyday activities and more engaged experiences in school, religious institutions, social settings, or formal performances. You may comment on your family’s musical tastes and what kinds of music you listened to or heard from day to day. 2.Pick one experience to write about in depth. Choose an experience that occurred during one particular day. If this experience was part of ongoing and/or regular activities (school, church) chose something significant that occurred on a specific day. Was there a particular performance or event that had special significance for you? Try to describe the setting and circumstances as completely as you can. 3.Select one song or piece that you listen to or perform often, or one that has acquired a special meaning for you? Describe what aspects of the piece or song that resonate with you and reflect on the circumstances in which you first became acquainted with this piece.
