Description of Results from the StrengthsFinder Assessment Leadership plays an important role in the nursing field, but not everyone has the traits to be an effective leader. According to Scully (2015), nurse leaders oversee patient care and hold advanced clinical knowledge to improve patient outcomes. Effective leaders strive to lead people and have a desire to improve the organization (Laureate Education, 2014). Nurse leaders act with authority to inspire others and ensure the safe delivery of patient care (Broome & Marshall, 2021). According to the StrengthsFinder Assessment, my top five themes are harmony, discipline, analytical, input, and restorative (Rath, 2007). Harmony- I do not enjoy arguments and I look for areas of agreement to avoid conflict. Discipline- I enjoy routine and structure and try to avoid disorder in my life. Analytical- I search for causes and ways to enhance certain aspects of my life. Input- I enjoy acquiring new information and examining sources of information. Restorative- I enjoy solving problems and improving my skills and knowledge. Two Core Values Two core values I would like to strengthen are compassion and teamwork. Compassion helps us better understand someone else’s situation and allows us to connect with people. Nurses are inherently compassionate because we want the patients to know that they are cared for and valued. Although I would consider myself a compassionate person, I think it is something that we all can improve on, especially during stressful times or situations. Teamwork is another important value that I would like to strengthen because it will help coordinate care and improve effective communication. Nursing is built around a multidisciplinary approach, so learning how to work within a team will improve patient outcomes and reduce nurse burnout. Two Strengths Two strengths I would like to strengthen are self-assurance and risk-taking. Self-assurance is closely related to confidence. Nurses must be confident in their knowledge and abilities to provide the best care to the patients. I have only been a nurse for three years, so I still have many questions, and I can be a little unsure of my abilities at times. The best way for me to improve my confidence is by lots of practice and experience, which comes with time. Healthcare and nursing also do not come without risks. It is no secret that I am not an avid risk-taker and I tend to stay within my comfort zone, but a leader learns how to assess situations and navigate certain risks. Two Characteristics Two characteristics I would like to strengthen are adaptability and humility. Adaptability refers to being able to adjust to changes and new situations. As a nurse and leader, it is important to be flexible and anticipate and manage daily changes. As I mentioned above, I tend to stay in my comfort zone, but I try to embrace new things and progress. Demonstrating humility in the workplace can be difficult, but it is an important attribute to growth. Humility allows us to facilitate learning and improve on ourselves.
