After reading Chapter 2 of the textbook Relativism, reflect on the following:Identify an ethical belief that you have. You can choose any belief on any topic but the belief you choose to discuss must be an ethical belief (a belief that something is right or wrong, just or unjust) and should be specific and one that you regard as true. Try to state this belief in one sentence of the form: “My strong ethical belief is that…” such as “My strong ethical belief is that the death penalty is immoral.” Place the sentence at the top of your post and highlight the sentence in bold text. In paragraphs below your belief, discuss the following:Reflect on yourself: What are the reasons for your belief? Try to explain as succinctly as possible the main reason(s) why you have the belief that this is right/wrong or good/bad. Do you consider this to be something you were merely conditioned to believe, or do you think these beliefs represent your own independent thought and reflection? Explain.Reflect on the other: If you were to try to explain and defend the contrary beliefs of some from another culture, how would you do that? (I.e., do your best to speak from their point of view about why they hold certain beliefs on this issue.)If you had to identify an assumption, background conviction, or way of thinking that best explains why someone from another culture would have a different belief, what would that be? Engage with the text: Using at least one quote from the text, briefly describe and explain moral relativism and what it means to say that a belief is objective, universal or relative, then address the following questions:Do think the belief you described above is objective, universal or relative? That is, do you think your belief is shared by many cultures and groups, shared by all cultures, or relative to your own culture? Whichever you choose, explain your reasons.Chapter 2 loaded in files section.
