Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of chattel slavery in the United States in 1865.  As we’ve been reading in some of our texts, particularly in The Deep by Rivers Solomon and Undrowned by Alexis Pauline Gumbs an important part of celebrating one’s liberation is honoring the past.

In recognition of Juneteenth and in alignment with our course theme, for extra credit: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture’s efforts to recover sunken slave ships through “The Slave Wrecks Project.”

Assignment: Review the website (be sure to visit all of the pages) for The Slave Wrecks Project.  Then write a brief reflection (150-200 words) about the project.  Your reflection should answer the following questions:

  • What do you think about the project?
  • Name one way you would connect our course material to the project

Guidelines:

  • The response do not have to be submitted as an MLA formatted document. Again, a brief reflection 150-200 words about the project.
