What were the strengths and weaknesses of scientific realism that emerged from the debate? —– Realist Strength- Strong form- True statements- Current theories- Tested- Aim of science is to discover truth.—– Realist Weakness- Theories can be disproven- Fallible and revisable- They rely on the most fruitful theory.- Weakness of claims2. What were the strengths and weaknesses of antirealism? —– Antirealist Strength- Predictions, Observations, and Experiments- Restrict science to claims that can be justified- Theories are productive —– Antirealist Weakness- It is not interpreted as true or false.- Fallible- Replaced in the future- Manipulated3. Which side did the majority of the class seem to support? Some responses… —- It is a hard choice to make. Science is so fluid and with more learning come fallible theories. The disproving of theory makes it look less valid. Humans like true and false answers; we see things in black and white. This makes it hard for us to trust something that over and over through the years has been disproved or found to be fallible….—- I personally didn’t realize the level that science is fluid and changing until this last year. It is crazy to me that concepts we have been taught are technically wrong. Things are facts or for sure in the way I thought science worked. Then we find out that isn’t exactly the case, and that things we thought are true are proven wrong later sometimes. I feel like this creates a camp of people who can always try to ignore what science says since there is a chance it could be proven wrong later. This really fuels the misinformation out there sometimes….—- Scientific realism is an acceptable way of viewing and comprehending science… Scientific realism believes theories that are at least partially true and make genuine claims… I think that it is good to make good claims and then be able to test the theory rather than saying because I can not see it does not exist…—- anti-realism questions everything and does not agree with things that can not be seen4.
