Write an essay comparing how Bob addresses heartbreak and estrangement in each. You may want to consider the following questions (but are not required to): – From what perspective(s) is Dylan singing? To whom is he singing? – How would you describe the unfolding of the lyrics? (e.g. linear, fragmented, circular, etc.) – What are the circumstances and or motivations surrounding the breakup? Who is involved? – How does Dylan portray his accountability in their separation? – How would you describe Dylan’s sentiment toward the situation? (e.g. regretful, bitter, resigned, etc.) Does Dylan’s emotional response shift throughout the song? If so, how? – How does the expressiveness of Dylan’s voice and the instrumental playing interface with the lyrics? (e.g. contradict, subdue, augment, etc.) – How do images or descriptors impact or underscore sentiments in the narrative? Please interweave these songs in your analysis (i.e. In both “Song A” and “Song B,” Dylan expresses ___(blah blah blah)____. In contrast, “Song 3” ____(blah blah blah)____.) Put the songs in dialogue with one another! Do not describe them one-by-one in isolation. You will also be expected to synthesize the two interpretations in your final presentations, so think of this as practice. PS: The number of references is not limited as long as it is coherent to the writing (I put 1 here for convenience, but definitely feel free to use more if you want).
