Women in Awlad ‘Ali society are expected to maintain “hasham”–a sense of shame and propriety, often related to sexuality. One important symbol of this is the veil. What do you think of the sort of propriety? Does hasham function to keep women in a subordinate position, or should the status of women be considered separately from the presence of the veil and other symbols of hasham?
