As a nurse leader, one of your major responsibilities is to develop an effective and cohesive team. Your ability to do so successfully determines your success. Nursing leadership is group oriented and very complex. Organizational communication often has many failures that may result in healthcare errors. Rapid changes in communication technology and the increased cultural diversity add to the complexity of communication. Miscommunication results when there is no clear understanding. This requires the nurse leader to be sensitive and perceptive to those around you to ensure your understanding of the environment, so you may act upon problems that may arise.

Miscommunication results in negative decisions, legal/ethical dilemmas, and lack of trust among teams. The goal of nurse leaders is to continuously strive to learn, develop, and maintain strong communication skills.
