Take a research topic of your interest and analyze it using the key concepts from this course. You must include ideas and citations from the Week 8 Readings. Part I: “Here’s my topic and this is how it’s typically studied.” Choose a research topic that interests you. (I would like to discuss improving quality of care for older adults). Briefly define, explore and describe the history of the research topic. Discuss how the topic is typically approached from a methodological perspective as well as a philosophical paradigm(s) of scientific knowledge. (Note: the Ponteretto article from Week 1 identifies four research paradigms: positivism, post-positivism, constructivism-interpretism, and critical-ideological). Part II: “Now that I understand the “Philosophy of Scientific Knowledge” as a field, here is how it applies to my topic. Address epistemological and ethical issues that affect how researchers think about the topic using two different research paradigms. Describe the ontological underpinnings, epistemological platforms and research methods most often used for each paradigmatic approach. Identify the benefits and weaknesses that each approach brings. Part III: “Since I learned so much, I’m going to tell you what I think about how others have done research and how I think research on my topic should be approached.” Which do you believe this is the best approach for the topic? Why? What might you add in your own approach to this topic?
