Explain how large number of algae and cyanobacteria phytoplankton in offshores and inland waters produce peptide and alkaloid toxins which dramatically affect the grazing aquatic animals and directly or indirectly affect human in different ways. These also involve eradication costs and affect quality of water. The most severe fatal human toxins called microcystins and anatoxins and some carcinogenic agents from aquatic habitats is also of phytoplankton origin. There are several websites and over 5000 research papers in peer reviewed journals describing these aspects appeared in last decade. The Chemical determination and application of ESI-MS/MS, MALDI-TOF-MS, GC-MS, 1 and 2D-NMR etc. are currently applied techniques dealing with these issues so that appropriate database can be created. The only lacuna is that there is no consolidated review of all such compounds. If customer wants I can provide more details.
