Part1
Coding and billing varies depending on the stop healthcare continuum. Each stop corresponds with a different health data set and coding classification system. Health data sets refer to the information collected on each patient in that particular specialty (Sayles & Gordon, 2020).
Here are some examples:
1) UHDDS: Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set: Information collected on patients in acute care settings
2) UACDS: Uniform Ambulatory Care Data Set: Information collected on patients in outpatient facilities
3) OASIS: Outcome and Assessment Information Set: Information collected on home health patients
4) MDS: Minimal Data Set: Information collected on long term care patients
5) DEEDS: Data Elements for Emergency Department Systems: Information collected on emergency room patients
Classification systems contain codes which are used to translate the physician documentation in the electronic health record into codes for the insurance companies to facilitate payment.
Part2
Medical billing and coding is a complex procedure that takes training and accuracy. Most think its a simple procedure add a few codes and numbers it’s easy. When a health care agency and provider starts they need contracts with medicare, medicaid, and insurance companies. This is not only for the health care organization but for the patients also. The proper billing and coding ensures that the patient does not have any unnecessary out of the pocket expenses. It also ensures that the health care organization gets the proper payments reimbursed back to them. Wrong coding can leave the patient with unpaid expenses and leave the provider not being reimbursed for their services. It is important that medical coders need to be familiar with diagnoses, treatments, and procedures. The information given to medical coders and billers come from electronic medical records, labs, provider notes, and x-rays. They must also have an understanding of insurance plans and co-pays. Insurance also have regulations on the amount that can be charged for a medical procedure or office visit.
