Respond separately to the two colleagues’ discussion below who chose a case different from yours by addressing the following: Describe another way the identified problem can be defined. What policy advocacy skills do you think should be used to address the identified problem? What makes a social problem a social work problem? Colleague 1 Discussion Rojelio’s Discussion: Tiffany Bradley Case study Discussion: Analyses of Social Problems in Case Studies Who is defining the problem? In the Tiffany Bradley case, her social worker informs her of prostitution charges being dropped. With the passing of New York’s Safe Harbor for Exploited Children Act, Tiffany is viewed as a victim of sexual exploitation (Laureate Education (Producer), 2013). What values are reflected in this definition? Social work values related to the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics are demonstrated by Tiffany’s social worker at Teens First. Facing charges for prostitution, her social worker presents her with news that appears to alleviate some concerns. A primary focus of social work is advocating for the social justice of clients, improving well-being, and supporting client self-efficacy (NASW, 2017). Tiffany’s social worker demonstrates an understanding toward his client’s situation. His focus in her care appears to revolve around the exploitation she face as a minor. He presents Tiffany with opportunities for social support and guidance (Plummer et al., 2014). The social worker’s primary approach is to assist Tiffany in feeling safe, support, and collaborative efforts within services (Plummer et al., 2014). What is being omitted in this definition? I believe that Tiffany’s sexual exploitation in regards to John T. is omitted. Under the defined sexual exploitation in the case, the abuse endured is not directly tied to her exploitation as a minor. More specifically, the consequences of Tiffany’s mandated stay at Teens First highlights the harsh realities of escaping sexual exploitation (prostitution). What other problems do you see that are not being acknowledged? Tiffany’s emotional state does not appear to be addressed. This is observed in her concerns regarding John T. Although her social worker suggests protection for the teen, there is no discussion about her state of mind. Tiffany appears to have the need for social support based on the circumstances that led to her sexual exploitation with Donald and then with John T. (Plummer et al., 2014). With services at Teens First, Tiffany appears to show improvement with continued support completing her GED and finding income (Plummer et al., 2014). References Laureate Education. (Producer). Colleague 2 Discussion Ruth’s Discussion: Petrakis Case Study Who is defining the problem? In the Petrakis case, the young intern is defining the problem to her field supervisor. The intern explains to the supervisor about the elder abuse she feels Helen’s mother-in-law has the experience and how she feels the need to fight for this cause for all elderly individuals. According to Dayton (2005), “Intervention is the lives of older adults and their caregivers is presented through the social work skills of psychosocial assessment, relationship building, and empowerment.” What values are reflected in this definition of the problem? The intern values are being reflected in this definition of the problem because she is the one defining the problem and the solution. The supervisor talked about a new policy and the intern talked about how great the new policy will be once it is infected for the elder community. She also talked about wanting to work more with elder abuse. The intern values show that she has a deep concern for the elderly and want to help in any way that she can. What is being omitted in this definition? The only thing that I notice that is being omitted in this case session is what the intern feels abuse is. Why she felt like the grandson was abusing the grandmother. She talks about what he did but not why she felt like that he did was abuse. What is the intern definition of abuse and how was the Petrakis case consider abuse, why does she feel he should be prosecuted. What other problems do you see that are not being acknowledged? Other problems that I notice that are not being acknowledged are the fact that people get away with elder abuse. According to Stark (2019), “Are Agency on Aging, the county Department of Social Serves, and Adult Protective Services are agencies that investigate elder abuse and neglect.” Just because abuse is reported does not mean that abuse is always confirmed, abuse can be physical; psychological, neglect, verbal, and even self-neglect.
