In Beccaria’s view, the concern over honour and prestige that was so central to the ancient world and its legacy in feudal monarchical traditions of Europe is an obstacle to the development of modern law and utilitarian government. In his view, the concern over family name and status should be replaced with the protection of liberty and equality under law. Summarize his criticisms of honour culture in chapters 9, 10, 21, 23 and 26. 2. Beccaria was very critical of torture, the death penalty and laws that let people get away with violence. Summarize the views he develops on these issues in chapters 16, 20, 28. 3. Beccaria argues that it is better to prevent crimes than punish them. Summarize the views he expresses on this matter in chapters 41-46.
