Response 1 Fahren: I was not familiar with the career services team and the information they can provide to you or the information you could look up on your own. I decided to take the career assessment, and initially, I did not think I would find a career match. Most of the answer choices I chose I clicked on strongly dislike. After taking the assessment, I discovered a new interest and potential new career as an arbitrator, mediator, or conciliator would coincide with everything else I would like to accomplish. My ultimate goal is to become a lawyer, or at a minimum, work in criminal justice or civil/human rights fields. Becoming an equal opportunity representative and officer, human resources managers/ Specialist also piques my interest. Most of these career paths do not require a master’s degree, although I still would like to pursue a master’s after completely my bachelors at the end of the month. I have also taken the Holland Code test in the past, and I have consistently been enterprising, social, and artistic. My highest is enterprising, and this tells me I enjoy taking on leadership roles and that I am assertive, energetic, and persuasive, with which I agree. Taking the assessment reassured me that I am in the right direction of what I ultimately want to do when I get out of the Coast Guard. All of my career interest focuses on some form of human rights, civil rights and social justice. My interest and career choices related to sociology because I would be working with many of the current issues we face and are fighting in society today: racial equality, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and so much more. Response 2: Kevin I did the career exploration just to check it out, but have done a few in the past and find that they often do not cover many important factors that need to be considered such as strengths and weaknesses, level of education you are pursuing, the amount of money you are seeking or the job availability in the area you live in. I suppose you can consider all of these things on your own and filter out the jobs that you do not find appealing, and it is a good place to get a general idea, but I do not find them that informational. Also, if you are finishing your bachelors degree, this is something you should have probably already considered, but I know we all take different paths and many may be going on for their masters degree. For this week I will choose a couple of other options from the career services website. The career coaching seems to have a lot to offer, and I actually have a meeting with my career coach a week from today. Having an actual conversation with somebody that has experience as a career coach who can help guide me in my search, with my resume, and help me to develop job search strategies seems to be the most useful. It covers all the bases, and I will also be able to run by her my ideas of pursuing a graduate certificate in leadership or going for my masters degree and I think the feedback from a professional will be extremely valuable. I would also suspect that a career coach is very familiar with the rest of the options of the career services website and will be able to direct me in the most beneficial direction next, while also covering most of the other areas. Since my career coach is going to go over my resume with me, I think the other service I am most interested in is interviews. Having practice with interviews and getting constructive criticism should really improve my interview skills. If I have the education and the resume, the next hurdle will be the interview. The career fairs and jobs boards all seem useful as well, but there are many job sources online that are free, where the interviews will not come too often, and hopefully when they do I will present myself in the best way possible. I do also plan on updating my LinkedIn account so I will probably look at the social media review option as well. Response 3: Marnie Response Question to me Question: How much do factors such as income, work/life balance, and stress play a role in career selection? My initial Post for background information: Option 1: Visit the Career Services website and view their personalized services menu. Choose 2-3 options from the menu that they think best fit your needs and explain why. Career Services After visiting the career services website, one service which fits my needs is resume review. It entails assessing a resume to make a person stand out from the crowd of candidates. That will increase the chances of getting a job. In a job application, I will be trying to convince an employer about my suitability for the open position. Therefore, it is sensible for another party to look at my resume and offer a fresh perspective. Experts from the career services website will assess my resume with critical attention, similar to an employer. Perhaps, such a review will help identify mistakes and help maximize my chances of landing the job. The second service which suits my needs is job boards. It will assist me in knowing the career opportunities available in my field. Consequently, I will hone my skills in a manner that makes me suitable for the open positions. Learning about opportunities in my area will motivate me to study harder. Job boards will also help in finding more job listings. That raises the chance of finding a suitable position. Besides that, job boards have refined search capabilities which ease navigation during the employment-seeking process. The search capabilities will help me find a job that suits my knowledge and skills. The third service that is vital to my needs is interviews. Making a striking first impression is of utmost importance at an interview (Nolan, 2019). It will increase the chances of an employer selecting me as the suitable candidate for a position. The career service website offers mock interviews, which help candidates to prepare for real meetings with employers. For instance, it contains questions about the ways of keeping self-control and appear to feel cool, calm, and collected during the interview. Participating in mock interviews will assist me in acquiring the skills mentioned above and increase my chances of finding a job that will be a perfect fit for me. Reference Nolan, E.
