Since the Greeks had no holy book such as the Bible, Torah, or Quran, historians look to epic stories like the Iliad and the Odyssey and myths such as Theseus and the Minotaur to discover laws about acceptable or unacceptable moral behavior on which the Greeks based their daily lives. Often, these stories and myths illustrated proper relationships, right and wrong actions, and consequences for those actions. From our readings of the Iliad, we witness the motivations and actions of the Greek hero Achilles. For the ancient Greeks, mythic characters like Achilles became examples, instructing individuals how to act and about which character traits were most valued in individuals. Culling from your various experiences with Achilles in the primary and secondary sources and your overall impression about the function of Greek storytelling, which character traits, both positive and negative, does Achilles most demonstrate? What can these tell us about the Greeks and their values? What do Achilles’ motivations and actions teach us about the Greeks’ sense of heroism and authority?
