4. Sonnets and Intertextuality Read Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Ozymandias” (1818) and Claude McKay’s “America” (1922). (Both these texts are available on the course Blackboard page, in the document titled “Sonnets by Shelley and McKay.”) Now, write an essay in which you analyze and compare these two sonnets. How are Shelley’s “Ozymandias” and McKay’s “America” similar, formally and thematically? How do they differ, formally and thematically? Why do you think McKay alludes to Shelley’s “Ozymandias” in the final lines of his poem? How does recognizing this intertextual relationship influence your interpretation of “America”? In what ways does the relationship of these poems illustrate the vitality of the sonnet as a poetic form?
