Sara Paretsky’s work has generated interest among scholars. This scholarship generally falls into two camps: some scholars argue that she successfully revises the hardboiled genre from a feminist perspective, but other scholars argue that she simply reproduces the hardboiled genre with a detective who happens to be a woman. Put another way, just making the private investigator a woman does not necessarily make a text a “feminist” text. Write an essay in which you take a position in this debate. At some point (probably early in the essay), you will need to explain the working definition of feminism that you and/or the scholars you discuss draw on.
