Assessment Task: You are required to write up your experiments in the format of a laboratory report, in which you present the results you have obtained, and conclude the final identification of your pathogens. Title – think of a concise and specific title that describes your report. Purpose – You do not need to write a formal introduction, but you need to explain the purpose of your experiments in one or two sentences. Methods – Write a summary of the methods. This does not need to be a fully detailed list of all steps, but a short overview of which procedures were carried out, in paragraph form. You do not need to include general methods that any competent microbiologist should be able to complete, but you do need to include the details that will allow them to repeat your experiments. Results •This is the main section of this report. •You need to present the evidence you have collected for each of the bacterial pathogens, those that help you make the identification and any other observations you may have recorded. •You may want to split this into two sections, one for each of your pathogens. •You should include your PERSONAL results for the identification of your Gram-positive organism, but you should use the CLASS RESULTS SUBSET for the identification of the Gram-negative organism. •You should include your Gram stain result for the Gram-negative pathogen, the PCR gel image of your group gel (annotate it correctly) and use the sequencing data to help identify the Gram-negative organism. Everybody was given the same Gram-negative organism, so you can use the class results. Discussion •Confirm the identification of your pathogen, discuss what your results mean and how the identification was reached. •Discuss the different methods and approaches you used, were they all successful, do you see any limitations with the methods you used or results you observed? •Were all methods equally useful for the identification of the pathogen? •You should finish your discussion by comparing the value of culture dependent and culture independent identification of bacterial pathogens – what are the benefits and limitations of each? (Reminder – we used culture-based approaches to identify your Gram-positive pathogens, and culture independent approaches for the Gram-negative organism). References – References should be included in Harvard format.
